Director of Communications

The Director of Communications is a strategic leadership role responsible for shaping and implementing a dynamic communications vision across the organization. This position leads the development of a communications strategy that makes meaningful connections between our work, our partners, and the communities we serve.
This role requires a self-starter who is comfortable operating both strategically and hands-on—building thoughtful, engaging narratives across multiple platforms. This person will be embedded across project teams, proactively identifying and producing stories of impact, crafting touchpoints for public engagement, and ensuring that Digital Harbor Foundation’s mission is powerfully conveyed through digital, print, and multimedia storytelling.
You will lead the organization’s content strategy, visual brand, and narrative voice—ensuring clarity, cohesion, and creativity in all external-facing communications.
Education and Experience Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree in Communications, Graphic Design, Visual Communications, Fine Arts, or a related field (Master’s degree preferred or equivalent experience).
- 7+ years of experience in communications, creative direction, or brand/content leadership, with demonstrated success in both strategic planning and content execution.
- Strong portfolio demonstrating experience in creative design, narrative development, and multimedia storytelling across a wide range of projects and platforms.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
- Proficiency in design software (Adobe Creative Suite, Figma, etc.) and familiarity with digital communications tools (CMS, email marketing, analytics).
- Strong written and verbal communication skills with the ability to translate complex ideas into accessible, compelling content.
- Experience building cross-platform communications strategies that include digital, print, video, and social media components.
- Project management skills and the ability to manage multiple concurrent projects and deadlines in a fast-paced, resource-constrained environment.
- Collaborative, self-starting approach with a commitment to amplifying community voices.
- Video editing and post-production skills are preferred.
- Strong asset management and organizational abilities.
Additional Notes
Remote. This position is remote with the potential for a few in-office meetings in the Baltimore, MD office each year.
Role and Responsibilities
Strategic Communications & Brand Leadership
- Develop and lead a cross-platform communications strategy that strengthens Digital Harbor Foundation’s visibility, engagement, and mission impact.
- Identify and implement strategic communication touchpoints to connect with diverse audiences, including community members, funders, partners, and the general public.
- Serve as a thought partner to leadership and project teams, ensuring communication efforts are responsive, timely, and aligned with organizational goals.
- Develop and maintain brand and messaging guidelines to ensure consistency in tone, voice, and visual identity across all channels.
- Support with organization and project development efforts via writing, copy editing, and other tasks as assigned
Creative Design & Visual Storytelling
- Lead the production of creative materials including annual reports, one-pagers, websites, brochures, social media graphics, and fundraising collateral.
- Ensure creative content reflects the organization’s high standards for quality, mission alignment, and audience engagement.
- Manage design projects from concept to delivery—including timelines, budgets, and vendor relationships—while ensuring accessibility and brand fidelity.
Embedded Collaboration & Content Discovery
- Work closely with project teams to surface stories of impact and innovation within programs and initiatives.
- Create and maintain an editorial calendar informed by project milestones, fundraising campaigns, and organizational goals.
- Build strong relationships with internal staff to ensure storytelling is integrated into programmatic work and communications needs are proactively addressed.
- Translate technical or complex content into accessible, inspiring messaging tailored to a range of audiences.
Digital Content & Multimedia Production
- Oversee the creation and distribution of digital content across email, web, social media, and other platforms.
- Lead video and multimedia storytelling efforts that bring our mission and impact to life.
- Manage and evolve the organization’s website content and structure, ensuring it serves as a hub for engagement and storytelling.
- Use data and analytics to track engagement and improve content effectiveness across all channels.
Publications & Impact Reporting
- Lead the development of the annual report and other key publications, ensuring they highlight the organization’s outcomes, vision, and financial stewardship.
- Produce impact reports, case studies, and stakeholder communications that showcase stories of community leadership and systemic change.
Collaboration & External Engagement
- Partner with external vendors (e.g., videographers, photographers, printers) to ensure high-quality production of creative and communications assets.
- Stay informed on industry trends and best practices in nonprofit communications, branding, and digital storytelling.
- Represent the communications and design function in cross-functional meetings and planning sessions.
General
- Manage multiple communications and design projects simultaneously, prioritize effectively, and deliver high-quality work on time.
- Review all external content for accuracy, consistency, and adherence to branding standards.
- Support additional organizational communications efforts as needed.

Compensation
Compensation for this full-time position is $80,000 - $90,000 annually, commensurate with experience.
